Dental Fillings in Dacula

Fillings

Getting cavities filled is an important part of avoiding more serious problems while keeping your smile bright and clean.

Cavities, unfortunately, are a fact of life. The average person will get 4-10 cavities over the course of their life, and 92% of adults have had cavities. Children, of course, get cavities as well, with about 42% of kids aged 2 to 11 having at least one cavity.

Because of how common they are, it can be easy to ignore or put off getting a cavity taken care of as quickly as you should. Many of us do our best to find excuses to avoid the dentist anyway, making it easy to ignore problems that aren’t causing us immediate pain.

When it comes to cavities, though, this can be a big mistake, costing you more money and more pain down the line.

Ultimately, there are three main ways cavities can affect you negatively:

Bad breath

As you probably know, cavities are caused by tooth decay. This decay, while largely unnoticeable at first, can begin to cause some inconvenient – and even embarrassing – symptoms, including bad breath. While stocking up on Tic Tacs might seem like a reasonable solution, you’re only delaying the problem, which can lead to more serious matters.

Pain

If a tooth continues to decay, at some point it’s going to start hurting. This is because the decay is starting to affect the tooth’s nerves, which is a sign that the damage has become more severe. At this point, we might need to consider a root canal or tooth removal.

Infection

And finally, if the decay gets to the point that you get an infection from it, serious problems can start to arise, including extremely painful abscesses. There’s also the chance that the infection could spread to other parts of your body, which can lead to further health complications. In serious cases, this can mean the extraction of your tooth since the decay has destroyed too much of the tooth structure to simply fix and restore the problem.

It’s important to remember that the health of your teeth is not independent from the health of your whole body. When you have decay and/or infection in your teeth and mouth, that can impact that health of your whole body, both physically and mentally.

How Auburn Hills Can Help

At Auburn Hills Family Dentistry, we regularly fix our patients’ cavities to help keep them healthy. Basically, this involves removing the decay from the tooth and then filling in the hole with a composite, which is tooth-colored. We shape the composite so that it fits naturally to your bite, ensuring you won’t be grinding or damaging the filling.

If you have a child who’s dealing with cavities, we can also provide a dental sealant, which will help prevent future decay.

In addition, we help keep you – and your children – on track by making sure you’re taking care of your teeth when at home and that you’re getting checkups when you need them.
